Window capture size display

Not sure if it's there and I've missed it, but I would like to see that when you capture a single or multiple windows, when the box surrounds the area to capture, the size is displayed so you can see how big the capture will be. Something similar to the region capture size display. Thanks.

HyperSnap shows the size of the capture during the Region capture process. It's displayed in the center of the rectangle you outline. If you turned this display off, press the - (hyphen or minus) key on your keyboard and it will be back. This size is not show during Window Capture process, but you may view its pixel size inside HyperSnap after it was captured - just move the mouse outside of HyperSnap image area and look at low right corner of HyperSnap window - shows "Img Size" there. Thanks, that's what I have to do currently. It's just inconvenient having to keep capturing windows, then discarding them again until you get the correct size. Showing the size in the middle of the window like the region capture does would be a big time saver.

In above context, I'd very much like to know how/if possible to see how big an image is in kb right after capture, in other words - I need to know the clipboard physical size in bytes (not only in pixels) before I paste it into eg. an email or document. How/where do I see that without saving the file and looking in explorer? PS. Using ver 6.90.04 Best regards, Bjarne Dein

Hi Bjarne, it's not possible to know the file size in advance, one must save it to see how well any given format compressed it. I could tell you pretty accurately only uncompressed (BMP) format file size. With pasting to email the matter is further complicated, as I don't know how your email client will compress the image. They could choose it to send uncompressed, or as JPEG, TIFF or PNG compressed images. This changes from one email client software to another, and probably can be changed also within the same client with internal software settings. JPEG format and some TIFF flavors can also have different settings, e.g. different quality factor for compressing them (low quality image will be a smaller attachment to send, but look worse etc.) Greg

Hi Greg, Thanks for the response. My thinking is - and one of the major reasons for using HS is: - Minimize the size of screendumps that i often send with emails and working with documentations.
- There is a free choice of default file type and it dpi, when saving
Now my questions is: - When I've chosen jpeg as default filetype and set the quality factor to 50%, will the default file saved on the clipboard also be the same?
- Can I somehow make sure that the captured file on the clipboard is of a specific format and size, before pasting to an eventual other program?

Re. 1 - By default, no. The format in Clipboard is not a file - it's an internal Windows image representation, when you paste it into email, the email client converts it to whatever it needs to send the message. However, HyperSnap 7 has an option to save HTML format to clipboard. In that case it first saves the image as either JPEG or PNG file, then puts a text HTML code into clipboard for the compatible email client (or other editing software) to read. However, there is currently no control in the software to make it e.g. JPEG with 50% quality. It puts either a GIF image, if the number of colors on this image is less than 256, or PNG image otherwise. For regular Windows screen captures, these files will be probably smaller than JPEG even with 50% quality, but for real-life photos they may be larger. PNG or GIF formats do not lose any image quality at all. Greg

Click the down-pointing triangle on the "Copy" button in the title bar of HyperSnap 7, or in the "Edit" ribbon tab, then click "Copy Format" and put check-mark into HTML field of "Bitmap Copy Options" window that appears. Greg

Thanks - and fine for now. So - a little challenge for you maybe;-) Would it be possible in a near future release to see/get a way of automating a process after a screen capture that does the following: Save the dump in a predefined filetype, with a predefined resolution and color resolution and quality factor etc. and copy that file to the clipboard, so when ever click <Print Screen> and have selected my area (or what ever is default for Print Screen) it will be saved (to a temp file) according to above and copied to the clipboard in one stroke? That would be very very handsome in my daily work!!! Many thanks in advance. BR Bjarne

The saving part already is in HyperSnap 7. Click Capture Settings butoon, the "Quick Save" tab and you can define all of these parameters and have the file saved as soon as you capture it. There is also a check-box there to have the file path saved to clipboard - I just captured a fragment of this post and got it saved in PNG format, plus got the file name in clipboard - D:\tmp\snap008.png in my case. What exactly do you want to have placed in the clipboard? Windows image, HTML code for inserting the image into email (e.g. MS Outlook, Outlook Express etc.)? Or just the path to the image as the current Quick Save function does? Greg

Hello BR, you can set many parameters for creating screenshots up front. The format was already explained. You can also set the resolution, file type and color resolution. Within the quicksave dialogue click on the change button. In the save window you can set more options to the files to be saved, including putting the name of the file into the clipboard. Then take a look at the user tools. You can configure HS to execute small macros like leaving HS, executing a file loading and switching to another app etc. It is somewhat adventurous to get these tools going, but it is possible. Another option: Get the helpfile from HS 6. There you'll find the description of many commandline options. Maybe something fits you needs. Thomas Lesser Admin

Basically I need the screendump bitmap file to be reduced as much as possible (transformed into a jpeg file) and saved to the clipboard in one stroke without having to manually saying yes to reduce, save and recopy to the clipboard (not file path, but a physical jpeg file), so any clip will be imediate available for pasting in to any MS products (like word, excel and outlook) /Bjarne

I modified the code for the next release of HyperSnap 7 to use the exact file format specified under "File/Save As..." or in Quick Save if you turn on automatic saving as well - provided that this format is compatible with HTML code, i.e. must be either PNG, JPEG or GIF. This will include JPEG quality settings etc. This change will appear with rel. 7.15.02 or any later, whenever that's ready to release... Greg
