Hypersnap icon has yellow artefact in top right corner

Is this new or have I just not noticed it before and what does it signify?

    I'm not sure which icon you mean exactly, but I did not change these icons for many years, so it's not new. Maybe you mean yellow "flash", as if you were trying to make a photo with a camera and the flash was on. When hot keys are activated, the icon has this "flash artifact". If you disable hot keys, the flash disappears, only a small yellow mark is where the flash lamp would be on a camera.
