In a batch file you could use a command like:

"C:\Program Files\HyperSnap-DX 5\HprSnap5.exe" -dumpopts

to save the INI file etc.

Greg

RE: Default settings, and other misc stuff (aoz)

Greg,
thanks for reply

1; re: prompt for file name -
I don't want to check that box, when scanning in from multi-form document feeder, because I want to walk away from machine.
The problem is just to make sure that a prompt exists if I'm going to overwrite an existing file.
I can live without this, but something to look at, because the rest of the program is so good at checking to prevent overwrites of existing stuff.

2; re: the command line -
where do you run the command line from?

I tried the RUN section of (start -> RUN), and I tried a batch file, but neither of these worked.
Finally, I went to DOS mode, and navigated to the actual Hypersnap folder, and ran the command line to do a dump of options, and I finally got the INI file produced.
I'll keep working at this, but any info as to how to have the batch file run this and point correctly to the hypersnap folder, is apprecaited.
Nick
RE: Default settings, and other misc stuff (Support)

Nick,
for the command line options of HyperSnap-DX 5 see it's online help in "Advanced..." section, "Command line switches" topic - see -dumpopts and -readopts.

For Auto-save, I believe it will prompt you for overwrite if you also tick the "Prompt for file name on each capture" option - then you have to confirm each save with a click on "Save" button in a standard File dialog - or change the settings there with each save. So far I don't have any option to prompt you for overwrite in auto-save when there is no prompting for file name.

Greg

RE: Default settings, and other misc stuff (aoz)

Greg,
thanks for the reply

re: the Print Setup, linked to the PRINT command - your suggestion/method sounds good; I think that would help

re: separate user profiles - I NEVER set up separate user profiles, due to glitches in how otehr programs get installed, etc; this way, I just install software, and whichever family member uses the machine, they all have acces to the same software, etc; I don't have to worry if I installed a program for user01, user02, etc.

SO, I guess I could do one of two things
1. edit/copy the registry subsection for hyperionics, to a REG file, named Hyper.wife, and then reset the program for Me, hyper.husband, then just copy the appropriate one back by batch command, whoever starts the program.
2. try the command line method; I'm comfortable with command lines stuff, and I'll explore the hyperionics settings to see how they work.

Again, thanks for your replies; let me know if you want me to experiment on anything.

ONE other question
re: the Auto-save feature, and having it check if a file exists, and to prompt if attempting an overwrite - any ideas on this?

Nick
RE: Default settings, and other misc stuff (Support)

Nick,
HyperSnap-DX saves all it's options/settings to the registry on a per user base. The user is the name under which you log in Windows 9x/ME/2000 or XP. So if you created separate user named for yourself and your wife on your home computer, there would be no need to separately save/restore the settings. Many other programs work in the same way, this would solve the problem for all of them, even let you and your wife have separate Windows desktops and so on.

There is actually a way in HyperSnap-DX to save/restore settings to/from file, but it involves using command line switches, so it's not very convinient for regular use. So far mostly system administrators used it for making custom settings for the users on large corporate networks.

HyperSnap-DX saves all its settings when you exit the program or shutdown Windows - but if you crash Windows completely, there is no way to save them - all programs execution is stopped upon such crash.

As for combined Page Setup and Print - may be a good idea. I could add an extra button labeled "Print Now" on "Page setup" window. Then you could use our menu customization feature (View/Customize) to remove "Print" item completely from the "File" menu and maybe even rename "Page Setup" to either "Print" or "Page Setup and Print" and your requirement would be totally satisfied...

Greg

Default settings, and other misc stuff (aoz)

Greg,
version 5.03 has helped with some prior issues I wrote about (default saving of font size, and the "auto" view mode)

this weekend, I scanned in about 1500 pages (multi-feed HP scanner) of B/W 200 dpi JPG files (old insurance policies), and used Hypersnap as front end.
I used auto-capture/save

My Wife also used the machine in between my uses, to do genealogy, 300 DPI, color, BMP

Now, the problems/comments/suggestions

1. WHERE are the defaults of Hypersnap stored- registry, or internal to program? If in registry, I would like to, upon exiting, SAVE my default working stuff (directory of saves, Quick-save counters, fonts, etc) to a .REG file, and then re-click on this .REG file before I started to re-work with Imaging; the same scenario would be used by my wife, so she did not have to reset all her controls.
If the values are stored inside a program, then which one is it, because I could make two versions of it (Hsnap.wife, and Hsnap.me), and then before starting, copy the appropriate one to the default program name (copy hsnap.me -> hsnap.exe)

2. Default values not saving - if I was scanning in about 20 pages of documents, and the scanner would crash at about the 10th page, and screwedup the machine, and I had to restart the computer, then Hypersnap defaults did not save at this crash point; the counters and directories would revert back to that they were BEFORE the start of the 20-page scanning. Is there a way to SAVE the point-in-time settings, short of exiting out of the program and then coming back in? Also, if I exit, but keep the icon on the task bar, this does not seem to qualify as an EXIT, for purposes of saving the defaults, so I've unchecked the taskbar-visible, so the program actually exits if we 'x' out of it

3. re: the quick-save counter -
I set the counter for 001, and scan in 20 documents; counter is now at 020.
I THEN manually create a file (xxx_021.jpg), which is a title page upon which I enter, with a font, what the next 30 pages are going to be; this serves as a graphics index page.
NOW, I insert the next 30 pages, BUT if I forget to reset the counter, the counter will start at 021, and overwrite my index page; I must reset the counter for 022, so it starts at the next page. Is there a way to have the quick-save notify me if it is going to overwrite a file? You have actually done excellent file protection throughout the rest of the program, with using only a "save-as" method, and always asking if I want to overwrite, but in the quick-save it is the one place where overwrites are still possible-and-invisible, without notification.
(I do NOT want to turn on the auto-prompt for every auto-saved file; I just want to be notified if I'm going to overwrite something. I messed up one other time, reset the counter wrong, and overwrote 20 pages before I knew what happened)

Item #3 - on printing - I think it would be worthwile, on printing, to have the PAGE SETUP, and PRINT screen, be combined. Your program design is good in that you retain the most-recently-used parameters for most things, but I don't always remember what I used prior, and then absent-mindedly go to print something, and forget that I've selected "fill the page", or "not-fill-the-page", or what the margins are, etc., especially when we're doing genealogy work. this way, I'd be forced to view the current selections (margins, auto-sizing, etc) before I start a time-consuming graphics page print, only to realize I messed up.
OR, from the PRINT menu, have a selection that allows "always show PAGE SETUP box before printing...."

Overall this program is excellent. I realize you can't include all enhancements, suggestions, etc. But I'm passing these on because I feel that you take all them into consideration, and that you do use worthwhile ones.
Also, I'm willing to beta-test any of the enhancements

Again, thanks
Nick
