@Voice keeps crashing, since my last update on 4-12-19

Whenever I try to "share," from Chrome to @Voice, it cashes, again and again, and I have to Add+ it, then open @Voice separately. It's really a pain in the ... Can I reinstall the previous version?

Which version of @Voice is it? If 16.6.7, then please upgrade to 16.6.8 or newer, today I made an error when releasing version 16.6.7 that caused it to crash on about 10% of devices. I corrected it after a few hours releasing version 16.6.8, which seems to be OK.

I'm having the same problem and I am on the 16.6.8 update. I've been having it happen every time I open the app for several days. To be clear, it crashes several times when the app is started up and when I try to look at the app while it's talking. The only "fix" that works is not letting the screen go black and tell my phone not to kill the application (several times) until it starts working normally or until I try to open another file to read from. Sometimes when it is freezing it will refuse to let me terminate the program and will continue talking until I restart my phone. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app several times. I'm on an up to date Verizon Google Pixel 2XL if that helps.

What _exactly_ you mean by "crashing"? Is there some error message on the screen when it crashes? Or do you mean that it stops talking a short time after you turn off the screen, and when turn on the screen, @Voice app has disappeared from the screen without any message? I have Pixel 2 XL as well, upgraded to Android 9. Which Android version of @Voice app is on your device?

16.6.8. If the screen is on when it crashes, I get the popup that says the app has stopped responding and it asks me if I want to kill, wait, or send feedback. If the screen is off when it crashes, it stops talking and the app has disappeared from the screen, the notifications, and the open apps app drawer. No message. Exactly the same behavior as if I had clicked kill.

I'm sorry, I meant to ask "which Android system version is installed on your Pixel 2 XL phone?"

These are two different problems. The message about app stopped responding: what exactly do you do in the app when this happens? Do you open any particular file or web page at that time? If so, please send me that file by email attachment, or provide the address of the web page when this happens. Or do you just start the app when it was not previously running at all?

Also, the app may start responding again if you press "Wait" and wait a little bit. Could you verify this the next time? Another thing to try, as most of "app stopped responding" error reports I get are inside the WebView control (Google Chrome browser) code: could you open Android system settings - Apps - find Chrome browser there and press "Clear cache" for it? This would make the system to re-compile Chrome components code, hopefully with less errors.

About app disappearing when screen is off and its reading aloud, please read https://hyperionics.com/atVoice/stops.html. Other than the conditions listed there, you may be running some 3rd party app to "clean memory", "clean sweep", "Battery saver" or anything like that, which kills apps running in background. Please review all installed apps for such behavior and configure them to not kill @Voice app, or uninstall such apps completely.

    I'm running Android 9 Pie.

All of these problems happen regardless of what file or website I use. I just start the app when it was previously not running. And yes, the only way I can get the app to work is to press the Wait and wait for it to respond. The problem is that this takes several repetitions of Wait (so that it takes many minutes to open the app every time) and sometimes freezes badly enough that I have to restart my phone.

I cleared the cache by going into the Chrome browser and clearing the cache. I tried to do it the way you suggested but I didn't see the settings you were talking about. I don't know if this makes a difference?

I don't have any third party apps like that and I already had everything set up the way it is suggested in the link you sent.

When the screen is off, the app only stops working if I have just started up the app, the same way that it crashes when the screen is on, so I think the two problems are related. I think maybe when the screen is off it assumes I want to kill the app and does so without asking me.

I also have Pixel 2 XL with Android 9 Pie, have never seen such problems... Did you try uninstalling @Voice app, rebooting, installing it back? It could have some errors accumulated in its code cache, and this procedure should clear them. If you did not do this yet, please try this uninstall/reboot/reinstall now and see if it helps, before reading the next paragraphs below.

Next, since I have the same phone, I can give you exact steps to uninstall/reinstall Google Chrome browser and Google Play Services (again, they could have errors accumulated in the code cache). Of course, a factory reset of the phone would fix such errors too, but it has its drawbacks (necessity to setup you phone from scratch).
    • On Android home screen, swipe screen from bottom to open "app drawer", find and press "Settings" there (blue circle with white gear icon).
    • Next press "Apps & notifications". You'll see a list of recently opened apps, press "See all XX apps" below that list.
    • Scroll down, find and press "Chrome" browser icon, then press the 3 vertical dots button at top right, press "Uninstall updates" there. It will ask "Replace this app with factory version?", press OK.
    • Back to "App info" screen with all apps, find and press "Google Play services", press the 3 vertical dots button at top right, press "Uninstall updates" as above, confirm replacement with factory version.
    • When done, reboot the phone. When it restarts, open Google Play Store app, and update Chrome and "Google Play services" back to the latest version. Then test @Voice app again.
Please let me know if following the above procedure helped. If not than only the last resort - factory reset of the phone - remains, as the errors may be in other system components too, and I have no clue which ones.

One more quick question: maybe the problem is related to the contents you open, e.g. some specific web pages you share to @Voice, or files you open? If you think that it could be the case, there would be hope that I can reproduce it and find a fix. Please send me some web links that cause the problem, or email me as attachments the files you open when this happens.
