Capture , File name to save as, changed on the fly before, now dows not work?

to all
I know I am not crazy (I hope)
but I used to be able to enter FILE NAME, in the SAVE AS line;  and append it with a number; and teh NEXT file would attempt to save , with THAT name, and the number incremented as per the counter in the QUICK SAVE options.
 
example
if the Quick-save name was .....Scan-1002
 
and I did a scan, and in the SAVE AS box, entered TEST-3003.jpg
 
and then scanned again -
it would present the SAVE AS box, and hve in it "TEST-3004.jpg"
 
in the latest versions, the SAVE AS box presents the actual name that is entered in the QUICK SAVE box, not allowing name changes on the fly
 
I KNOW I was able to do this before;  I know I can't now;  I don't know what I am doing differently, or if this is operating differently, but any feedback is appreciated.
 
I do NOT have any of the EARLIER install versions;  if there is a way to download one of the much-earlier version 8's, I' d be wiling to put it on my test machine to test what I did, etc?
 
anyway, any help appreciated, as it was nice to be able to enter a new SAVE AS name,  and have it continue to increment
