How can background be removed from image?

Is there a way of removing background from image easily? At the moment i use the eraser tool which takes ages and then i use the zoom tool to make finer adjustments...not very easy around people as you need a very steady hand.Any chance of having a Magic Wand tool?

    I'm sorry, don't have any Magic Wand... One other way to do this would be to define a closed region by marking points around a person or other object, but it's tedious as well.
