Volume is changing

Using a fairly new Samsung Note 10 lite.
I really like the app, but the volume changes so often it makes using the app impossible.
The volume changes happen only between sentences, and the volume is always decreasing, never increasing.
If I increase the level using the phones external buttons, the level goes up. But when the audible level goes down again and again, increasing the level using the buttons does not help. They seem to be at maximum, and the volume is still too low.

I'm listening to an epub format book.

Tested without Bluetooth, using the phone's speaker.
Stream: Music (default)
Let music play in the background: No.
Using a non-network voice.

Thank you for posting the extra details (through phone's speaker, Music stream, no background music and non-network voice). It seems that Google Text-to-speech engine is misbehaving on this device. Could you please try some other, non-Google voice to see if it will have the same problem? You could e.g. download Vocalizer TTS engine and install some voices from them. The voices are for purchase, but they let you use each voice for free for 1 week, so it's a good test tool. Or try totally free (though lower quality) RHVoice TTS engine.

If other voices work fine and Google TTS not, maybe uninstalling Google TTS (or uninstalling its updates, if can't be uninstalled completely), then rebooting device and installing it back could help.

Hey Greg...
I have the same problem, with it changing frequently.  And I can easily turn it off and reproduce it.  :)

- Make sure under settings/Audio you have "For Each Voice" "Let music play in the background" checked.
- Leave "use old method" unchecked and Music (default) as your stream
- Easiest way to reproduce it is to start listening with your bluetooth headset.
- Watch the pop-up menu.  In my case, I have volume at 4 of 25
- Now change the pitch by one setting.  Volume switches to 13 of 15 (again, my settings, ymmv)
- Change the pitch again by one notch. Volume switches back to 4 of 25
- This does NOT seem to be related to the tts engine used, I have Google TTS as well as Vocalizer.

Unfortunately, this volume-flopping happens without you doing anything as well, most often at the start of chapters or in certain circumstances when another source grabs the stream.

For now, Generic can just turn off "Let music play in the background" and all should be well.

Good luck!

Hi Scott,
I somehow missed this post, or forgot about it. Indeed I can reproduce what you describe, when "background music" is on. I'll investigate some more. Background music is really a hack, Android does not support such functionality well. If I cannot figure it out, I may be forced to remove the "background music" option completely.

I actually did something to prevent this, if you want, download version 20.2.2 (or any newer) from Google Play store and test. Let me know if you think that the problem was fixed, and if not - how to reproduce it. Thank you!

There were about four ways that would reliably have it mess up, and 20.2.4 appears to have fixed at least two of them! (The other two are harder to reproduce.)

Thank you kindly! I'll let you know if it recurs when the other triggers naturally happen.

Appreciate it!

Thank you. It would be good to know the circumstances or conditions to reproduce the other ways.
