Retain previous file name

In a previous installation of HyperSnap, whenever I would save a new screenshot, HyperSnap would offer me the name of the previously saved image by default. I.e. if I had saved the previous screenshot as "my wonderful screenshot 01.png", that would be the default name for the next screenshot, so I could change the name to "my wonderful screenshot 02.png" and be on my merry way. Soon I would move on to "improved screenshot 01" etc.

Now I have installed HyperSnap 8 and somehow I can no longer get this to work. I believe it was a mixture of settings in the "View & Edit" and "Quick Save" tabs of the Capture Settings. Can anybody please remind me how I to get this to work again? The previous installation is gone, thus I can't refer back to it.

It was never like this before, the default name for a new capture is "Snap" with a number. It can be changed under Capture Settings - Quick Save tab, where you can give a new path and file name, plus numbering scheme, and also select option to use this naming even if automatic saving of captures is turned off.

I couldn't have been hallucinating for all these years... *grumble mumble configure test*

Ah, found it: When I check "Do not change current image" in "View & Edit" of the Capture Settings, that gives me exactly the behavior I was looking for.

Problem solved, even if it may be due to an unintended feature on your part.

Oh, I never us HyperSnap with this setting... Please make sure that it does exactly what you want, if you have not set up auto-saving of captures, a manual save may just save the same old image, not the new capture...

    see my thread of

Capture , File name to save as, changed on the fly before, now dows not work

i thought i was going crazy, i believe that is how the SAVE (even with quickp-save enabled) worked, allowing changing hte name on the fly.
i will try looking at moatmai's finding, to see if that helps !

    we were NOT crazy !!
see attached files, the sequence works.  (see dropbox link, the upload link is not working for me)

first, see the settings fur quick-save.
then, as noted above, the CAPTURE -> View and EDIT settings, for "DO NOT CHANGE CURRENT IMAGE".
i then had file name in QUICK CAPTURE as "ORIGINAL-101.jpg", etc.
first two captures incremented these numbers.
THEN, on the fly, at "ORIGINAL-109", I changed the SAVE AS, (in hte SAVE AS BOX, NOT in the QUICK-SAVE), to NEW-109.jpg.
that file got saved as NEW-109;jpg, and the NEXT file SAVE AS request shows "NEW-111.jpg", and it saved it successfully.
now, all these images looked the same because i used hte blank scanner, but I will VERIFY by now changing actual scan source images, to make sure that i'm getting unique files, but I KNEW that somehow that name was changable on the fly (either by bug or by design)
If it IS by bug, then please don't FIX the bug, because the bug does not seem to have ever affected any one;  and maybe make it included as a FEATURE, because, as in past posts, this is a desirable item !
    thanks

OK, now I vaguely remember programming it that way, if you use Quick Save - Prompt for file name on each capture - then the program remembers the new name and new sequence file number your type into the "Save As" box and offers it as the default upon the next save. The "Do not change current image" setting on the "View & Edit" tab is not necessary for this, should also work with the first two settings (the default "Create new window..." and "Replace image in the current window...")
Thank you for solving the mystery!

    OK, we're getting somewhere.
however, I believe something is broken, in your desired method, because that is where we started to notice an issue, we did not mess with the "do not change current image" items before, we just used the "quick save" and the name, but somewhere the "save as" was not saving the NEW manually entered name.
I knew it worked that way before.
somehow the "do not save current image" is now re-forcing that name allowance, but I will test it some more

GREG, actually it does seem to work correctly; see the attached, shows the two windows of settings within the capture settings, and this does allow renaming
    i will continue to experiment.
    thanks
